CDEL: The ADA’s ‘Backseat’ Drivers

The ADA’s Council on Dental Education and Licensure, often referred to as CDEL, is the core ADA panel that will weigh the newly proposed changes to the anesthesia guidelines.

Dr. Stephen K. Young, Dean of the College of Dentistry at the University of Oklahoma and CDEL chairman, has already signaled that he, for one, likes the changes proposed by the Committee on Anesthesiology, which reports to him and the other CDEL members.

“[CDEL] was very pleased with the report…” Dr. Young told the ADA News earlier this month.  “I think the Board of Trustees, House of Delegates and membership will view this report as a significant step forward.”

TEAM 1500 thinks otherwise.

On paper, the proposed changes may make sense to Dr. Young and his CDEL colleagues.  After all, most of the 16-member CDEL panel doesn’t regularly practice oral conscious sedation, and as such CDEL members will not have to live under the changes they foist upon their many dental colleagues.  They are, in essence, backseat drivers.

There are dentists – by the thousands – who do regularly and safely administer oral conscious sedation under existing ADA guidelines and existing state regulations and their voices and experience are not being reflected in the proposed CDEL changes.

Team 1500 believes those with “their hands on the wheel” are not adequately represented by CDEL or its backseat drivers on the Committee on Anesthesiology.

Below are listed the current CDEL members.  If you personally know any of these dentists, please contact TEAM 1500 so that we can privately compare thoughts on the best method for helping better educate these council members about the realities of oral conscious sedation and the patients who benefit from it.
