Enlisting Like-Minded Dentists

Robert A. Simmons, DMD, MAGD

Dr. Simmons writes, “obviously, I’m behind TEAM 1500 100%.”  Actually, Dr. Simmons, we’d credit you 150%.

The Chesapeake, Virginia cosmetic and family dentist has been actively contacting fellow members of the Virginia Academy of General Dentistry (VAGD) to enlist their support for TEAM 1500’s mission.

Among those Dr. Simmons has contacted are the VAGD’s president, its president elect, and its CE director.

The dentist has been offering his patients oral conscious sedation for about two years.

“As members of the VAGD know well, in our state we pride ourselves on our commitment to continuing education,” Dr. Simmons wrote.  “Indeed, the VAGD boasts one of the nation’s highest percentages of members who have attained Fellows and Masters designations.

“The ADA needs to recognize the extraordinary track record of VAGD members (and their colleagues nationally) who have safely and effectively administered oral conscious sedation under existing ADA guidelines to tens of thousands of grateful Virginia patients,” Dr. Simmons added.

Dr. Simmons is a strong believer in continuing education, as evidenced by his own attainment of a Fellowship and a Masters in the Academy of General Dentistry.  Yet, as his support for TEAM 1500 reflects, he does not favor unnecessary education – such as the new ADA guidelines would impose.

    To Whom It May Concern:

It was brought to my attention that the American Dental Association is regulating our ability to provide patients with Oral Conscious Sedation.

Sedation Dentistry has given high fear patients who have avoided the dentist for years the opportunity to have their dental treatment done in a safe and comfortable environment. Because of the high fear of dentists, dental work, and/or needles, many patients end up putting off their visits, which often lead to worsened situations. Offering Oral Conscious Sedation in our office allows these patients to have their dental work done in the most comfortable way possible.

I have been in the dental profession for five years. In just the few months that I have been working with a Sedation Dentist, I have seen a huge impact on patients who have completed their dental work through Oral Conscious Sedation. To see patients transform from being terrified and nervous to relaxed and positive about being at the dentist is truly a gratifying for all of us at Commerce Park Dental Care. Oral Conscious Sedation allows these patients to overcome their fear of going to the dentist and replaces that fear with the new understanding that regular dental visits are essential in maintaining good oral health. Even the patients who would come in to tell us that they are embarrassed or ashamed of their smile and the condition of their teeth, develop a newfound confidence about themselves- thanks to Oral Conscious Sedation!

    Sincerely,
